Nexium is a prescription drug used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults.
Nexium is also known as esomeprazole magnesium.
Nexium is used to treat GERD, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), in adults. It is taken as a tablet and works by preventing the acid from being released into the stomach.
This is known as the acid reflux. It is usually a symptom of GERD. However, esomeprazole magnesium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).
This is how Nexium works. Once the esomeprazole magnesium stops, the acid in the stomach is neutralized by the proton pump inhibitor.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day. Nexium is taken with food. To help prevent esomeprazole magnesium from being absorbed, take the lowest dose of medicine (such as 1 tablet) that works for the shortest possible time. Do not take more than one tablet per day. Nexium is usually taken on an empty stomach.
It may take up to the next day or two for the full effect to work. It is best to take the medication by mouth with a meal or snack.
Nexium should be taken with food at the same times each day.
Do not take Nexium for more than 3 consecutive days. Taking more than one tablet in 24 hours can increase the chance of a severe condition. Taking more than one tablet in 24 hours is not recommended.
